چکیده

This paper demonstrates a method for using an autonomous underwater vehicle to measure the velocity of a deep-sea hydrothermal plume. Based on a system identification experiment conducted in the actual operating environment, we extracted a dynamic model of the vehicle's vertical response, then used that model to infer the vertical water velocity of rising plumes in the main observation area. The results are compared to more direct measurement using an acoustic current meter.

Observations of the volume flux of a seafloor hydrothermal plume using an acoustic imaging sonar

[2] We present a 26 day time series (October 2010) of physical properties (volume flux, flow velocity, expansion rate) of a vigorous deep-sea hydrothermal plume measured using our Cabled Observatory Vent Imaging Sonar (COVIS), which is connected to the Northeast Pacific Time Series Underwater Experiment Canada Cabled Observatory at the Main Endeavour Field on the Juan de Fuca Ridge. COVIS quant...

Identification of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Dynamic Using Extended Kalman Filter with ARMA Noise Model

In the procedure of designing an underwater vehicle or robot, its maneuverability and controllability must be simulated and tested, before the product is finalized for manufacturing. Since the hydrodynamic forces and moments highly affect the dynamic and maneuverability of the system, they must be estimated with a reasonable accuracy. In this study, hydrodynamic coefficients of an autonomous un...

Mechanisms of Buoyancy Transport through Mixed Layers and Statistical Signatures from Isobaric Floats

Idealized nonhydrostatic numerical calculations that resolve both plumes and geostrophic eddies are used to mimic isobaric float observations taken in the Labrador Sea Deep Convection Experiment and study mechanisms of buoyancy transport through mixed layers. The plumes and eddies are generated in a periodic channel, initialized with a vertical profile of temperature, and cooled by surface heat...

Airborne Doppler radar observations of convective plumes and radar ‘fine-lines’ ERAD02-A-00007

Reflectivities and Doppler velocities from an airborne 95 GHz radar are used to describe the detailed (~25 m) vertical structure of plumes and mesoscale convergence lines (‘fine-lines’) in the optically-clear convective boundary-layer (CBL). Multiple radar configurations are used, including a profiling mode, with fixed antennas looking up and down, and a vertical-plane dual-Doppler mode, employ...

Microbial ammonia oxidation and enhanced nitrogen cycling in the Endeavour hydrothermal plume

Ammonium was injected from the subseafloor hydrothermal system at the Endeavour Segment, Juan de Fuca Ridge, into the deep-sea water column resulting in an NH4 þ-rich (6177 nM) neutrally buoyant hydrothermal plume. This NH4 was quickly removed by both autotrophic ammonia oxidation and assimilation. The former accounted for at least 93% of total net NH4 þ removal, with its maximum rate in the ne...
